Description

This detailed kakemono from the Showa period depicts the famous warrior Kajiwara Kagesue, impressively portrayed in full armor on horseback. In masterful painting style, the artist brought the scene from the Genpei War to life, with the splendid colors of the armor and the dynamic posture of rider and horse unfolding a powerful presence. The blossoming branches in the upper part of the image set a poetic contrast to the martial scene and lend the work additional depth.

The painting is executed on fine silk and bears the seal of Otsuka Shunrei. The jikusaki made of wood stylishly complete the hanging scroll and underscore the high-quality character of the piece. The fine linework, combined with bold color accents, lends the depiction both historical authenticity and aesthetic vividness.

This kakemono combines the epic narrative of Japanese history with the artistic elegance of traditional painting. It is excellently suited as a collector's item for lovers of Japanese warrior motifs and at the same time conveys insight into the rich pictorial tradition of the Genpei War.
