Description
This remarkable kakemono from the Showa period combines traditional Japanese calligraphy with an artful depiction of a snail in a minimalist style. The understated elegance of the calligraphy, paired with the symbolic depiction of the snail, conveys a deep calm and serenity that is typical of Japanese Zen aesthetics.
The carefully executed calligraphy on fine paper shows the skill of the artist, who knows how to make a powerful yet gentle statement with just a few brushstrokes. The circle in the composition could be interpreted as an enso, a symbol of enlightenment and the universe, while the snail stands for patience and progress at one's own pace.
The jikusaki made of bone lends this work an additional note of refinement and underscores its authenticity. This kakemono is a wonderful piece for collectors of calligraphy and lovers of Japanese art, and can serve both as a decorative element and as inspiration for meditative practice.
