Description
Powerful, almost archaic brushwork characterizes this hanging scroll: a single, large-format character fills the picture area with dynamic, broad strokes, complemented by a smaller, finely structured sequence of characters at the left edge. The ink work draws its life from strong contrasts between dense black and the light paper ground, conveying an immediate, almost physical energy.
The hanging scroll bears the signature and seal of Kyosho Mizutani, a calligrapher of the Shōwa period, whose hand is distinguished by a confident, restless brushstroke. Such single-character calligraphies are among the most demanding disciplines of Japanese ink art, since every stroke must be placed without correction and immediately reveals the inner state of the writer.
The work is executed on paper and is delivered including the accompanying, signed wooden box (tomobako), which documents authenticity and provenance. For collectors of Japanese calligraphy and all who appreciate powerful, meditative wall art, this hanging scroll is an impressive unique work with an unmistakable character.
