Description

In powerful, flowing brushstrokes, the character for "long life" is set upon this kakemono – one of the most popular calligraphies in Japanese art, regarded as a wish of blessing for health and a long, fulfilled life. The dynamic linework with its thick and thin strokes reveals the mastery of Sho calligraphy, in which every stroke arises in a single, unrepeatable moment.

The artful mounting of the picture support, with delicate cherry blossom decoration and dark brocade pattern, frames the characters stylishly and enhances the festive, benevolent effect of the motif. A red artist's seal confirms the authorship of the work, which was executed on paper and dates from the Shôwa period.

Fitted with plastic roller ends, this hanging scroll is excellently suited as a gift of congratulation for special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries. Its clear, powerful visual language makes it a timeless expression of traditional Japanese calligraphy.
