Description
The intense, fiery elegance of Mino-yaki unfolds in this chawan by Matsuda Kizan with an almost dramatic presence. Mino ware, named after the autumnal momiji leaves of the Minoh waterfalls near Osaka, emerged in the 1920s through the pioneering work of Matsuda Kizan, who after repeated experiments developed a marbled red glaze using the low-fired raku process. Inspired by the brilliant red maple leaves, he created a unique technique that unites vivid red and white tones in swirling patterns, lending the ceramics an expressive, almost painterly quality – an innovation that made Minoh ware a distinct tradition shaped by the tea ceremony.
The vessel shows a compact, cylindrical form with a slightly irregular, wavy rim that creates a handcrafted, organic tension. The surface is crossed by a dense network of luminous red that contrasts with pure white in fine veins, swirls, and speckles, glowing deep red in places. This marbled glaze forms relief-like textures with cracks and ridges that catch and refract the light – an effect that makes the piece appear in constant motion, revealing new, fiery patterns depending on the viewing angle, as if autumn foliage and snow were merging in a dance.
As a handcrafted unique work by a pioneering master of the Mino tradition, this chawan is presented in a signed wooden box, underscoring its authenticity and its particular value for collectors. It is ideally suited for preparing matcha, where the intense presence of color and the rough, sensuous tactility enrich the ritual and create a deep emotional connection. Over time, the object gains even more character through gentle patina and use, becoming a living testament to Japanese ceramic art that captures the beauty of transient nature in enduring form.
