Description

With an alert gaze and a slightly tilted head, this crow sits on a gnarled plum branch, whose first delicate blossoms announce the approaching spring. The black plumage is rendered with strong, broad brushstrokes, while the orange beak and the equally colored legs lend a warm accent to the otherwise monochrome depiction. The clear, reduced pictorial language draws the eye entirely to the presence of the bird and the fine linework of the branches.

The painting is executed on paper and was created in the Shôwa period. The jikusaki made of bone completes the careful mounting of the hanging scroll. The combination of crow and plum blossom is a classic motif of Japanese kacho-ga painting and refers to the transition from winter to spring, when the first blossoms appear despite the winter cold.

The reduced, powerful depiction makes this kakemono an evocative collector's piece for lovers of classical Japanese ink painting and for all who appreciate a calm, nature-connected pictorial language in their home.
