Description
Dark red morning glories twine upward along delicate tendrils, while lush white chrysanthemum blossoms unfold in the lower portion of the composition – between them hovers a small, bright orange butterfly that lends the composition additional lightness. An accompanying line of calligraphy at the left edge of the image adds a poetic note to the motif.
The combination of autumn flowers and butterfly was a popular subject in Japanese painting, capturing the change of the seasons and the fleeting beauty of nature. The fine, naturalistic execution of the blossoms and leaves attests to great painterly care.
Painted on silk and fitted with a roller rod with handles made of ceramics, this kakemono dates from the Shôwa period. With its harmonious coloring and fine detail work, this hanging scroll is a particularly decorative example of classical Japanese flower painting.
