Description
Above a calm expanse of water, a delicately pink-toned sun rises, while in the foreground a powerful wave rears up, its fine, curving lines sweeping upward. The composition draws its life from this contrast between the quiet vastness of the sky and the movement of the water, creating an almost reverent morning mood.
Sunrise and wave are a popular motif in Japanese art with an auspicious character: they represent a new beginning, strength, and unbroken energy, and were often given as gifts to wish a family or a business good fortune for the future. The reduced pictorial language—little more than sun, wave, and the tone of the paper—lends the motif additional clarity and calm.
The kakemono dates from the Taishô period and was hand-painted on paper; the mounting is fitted with wooden jikusaki. The painter's signature at the lower edge of the image confirms the work as an autograph unique work.
